Absolute Value Function

Main Concept

The absolute value of a number is that number without its sign. The standard notation for the absolute value of a number x is x. Written as a piecewise function, its formula is

x = xx0x x<0

Using your mouse, click and drag in the plot below to draw a function. Then press the button below the graph to alternate between showing the graph of your original function and the graph of its absolute value. (The graph of the absolute value of your function replaces each point whose y-coordinate is negative with the point with the same x-coordinate and the corresponding positive y-coordinateits absolute value.)

Clear an existing graph by clicking on it.
