Find the force of friction required to keep a car on a circular track of radius 300 ft if the car weighs 3200 lbs and travels at the constant speed of 200 ft per second.
Solution
Make the substitutions m=3200/32 slugs, κ=1/300, v=200 ft/s, and v.=0 into
F=m a=m v. T+κ v2 N
to get F=1000+2002300N=400003N, where N is radially inwards toward the center of the circle. The units are foot-pounds.
