Justify the expression for the area of sector COB in Table 1.4.2.
Solution
In Figure 1.4.3, sector COB is part of a circle of radius cosθ, the length of the segment OB. This sector is a fractional part of that circle, which has an area of π cos2θ. The fractional part of the area is the ratio of the angle θ to 2 π, the full circle. Hence, the area of sector COB is |θ|2 ππ cos2θ=θ2 cos2θ.
