Chapter 2: Differentiation
Section 2.2: Precise Definition of the Derivative
Example 2.2.4
Evaluate limz→2z2+1−5z−2.
Solution
Control-drag the expression to be evaluated. Context Panel: Evaluate and Display Inline
limz→2z2+1−5z−2 = 25⁢5
Stepwise solution
Rationalize the numerator
z2+1−5z−2
=z2+1−5z−2⋅z2+1+5z2+1+5
=z2+1−5z−2 z2+1+5
=z+2 z−2z−2 z2+1+5
=z+2z2+1+5
Evaluate at z=2 to get 425=2/5, which Maple insists on writing as 255.
Relate to differentiation
If fx=x2+1, the given limit is the limit of the difference quotient fz−f2z−2, where z→2. This is f′2.
Control-drag fx=… Context Panel: Assign Function
fx=x2+1→assign as functionf
Write f′2 Context Panel: Evaluate and Display Inline
f′2 = 25⁢5
