Web Handling Library Overview
The Web Handling library provides Multibody-based components to model the mechanics of continuous flexible material in web handling processes.
Library Content
General Notes
The Web Handling library consists of a properties record and several subpackages:
Web Properties record defining the web properties
Webs the web component
Rollers drive, idle, and nip rollers
Sources and Sinks drums and ideal sources and sinks
Laminating laminating rollers and merged web properties
Sensors angle and force sensors
Primitives specialized Multibody components for positioning web handling components
Planar System Only
Although the library uses the 3-D Multibody library, the Web Handling library is strictly for modeling planar systems in the XY plane. For this reason, the gravity setting should not be changed from the default downward Y axis.
Web Properties
All models must have at least one Web Properties record on the canvas or in the encompassing subsystem.
Right to Left
The library is based on a specific flow of the material (web) from left to right (positive X).
To maintain correct connections, use the Flip Direction option found on all rollers to create a web line that goes from right to left:
The use of the Flip Direction setting is optional as position and orientation of the icons on the canvas has no bearing on the model configuration. Using it, however, enables you to create web line that maintain the visual correlation between canvas layout and the actual web line. Note that to complete the process, you will also need to flip the icon horizontally.
Special Connections
The connections between the Web Handling library components have to follow additional rules:
Each connection consists of two separate sets of connectors:
Connections are color-coded to prevent mistakes.
A Span component must be placed between other web handling components
Roller/Drum Rotation Convention
To simplify usage and the connection of 1-D rotational components (motion/torque drivers, electrical motors, etc.) to rollers, the following convention is used:
Positive rotation is defined by material moving downstream. This means that if the configuration changes, the internal rotation axis is changed to maintain the meaning of the positive rotation.
Effective Roller Radius
The effective roller radius, reff, defines the relationship between the web transfer speed and the roller angular velocity under no-slip conditions, vweb=Reff⁢ωroller; various cases are shown below.
