Wind Drum

Wind drum component

Description

Usage

Parameters

Summary Variables

Description

The Wind Drum component models a wind (rewind) drum with variable roll radius and inertia.

Usage

The Wind Drum component must be at the end of a web line.

Using the provided 1D rotational flange (flangec), the Wind Drum component can be equipped with a motor.

Equations

Consider the drum shown below:

Ta

Upstream tension

va

Upstream speed

τ

Motor torque (= zero if modeling an idler roller)

ω

Angular velocity (positive means wind)

Rc

Core radius

Rt

Instantaneous roll radius

dB

Bearing damping coefficient

th

Web thickness

W

Web width

The time-varying roll radius is given by the following differential equations:

dRtdt={ωth2πUse stepwise=falseωth2δ__φ0<φ<δ__φ0otherwise

where φ is the rotation of the drum between 0 and 2π. When the Use stepwise option is selected, the roll radius increases only over a portion of each turn defined by δφ.

TaRt=τmJtdωdtdBω

va=Rω

The roll inertia consists of the core inertia, Jc, and roll variable inertia, Jt:

Jt=Jc+π2ρWRt4Rc4
