Section A-5: Evaluation
Introduction
A standard requirement in exploring the concepts of the calculus is the need to evaluate mathematical expressions at various values of the variables in the expressions. This process is typically called "substitution" but most often is implemented in Maple through an "evaluation" step. The examples below clarify the tools available in Maple for such calculations.
Examples
Example A-5.1
Evaluate x2+3 x−5 for
x=7
x=a2−1−a2.
Example A-5.2
The volume of a right circular cone is V=π r2 h/3. Evaluate V for r=3 and h=5. (This "double substitution" is known as simultaneous substitution.)
Example A-5.3
The volume of a right circular cone is V=π r2 h/3. If the radius is proportional to the height, and the height is 2, evaluate V at r=α h, then set h = 2 . (This is known as sequential substitution.)
