CAD Subsystems

CAD subsystems are shared subsystems that are generated using the MapleSim CAD Toolbox. They are identified by the CAD subsystem icon ( ) in their lower left corner:

Internally, a CAD subsystem is made up of multibody components. Therefore, you can build and run models containing CAD subsystems in MapleSim even if you do not have the MapleSim CAD Toolbox installed.

Although CAD subsystems are similar to shared subsystems, there are some differences as to where their definitions are located, how you open them, and how you edit them. (If you do not have the MapleSim CAD Toolbox, you must first convert them to a standalone subsystem to edit them.)

If you have the MapleSim CAD Toolbox installed, you can open, explore, and update the CAD model in the MapleSim CAD Toolbox by double-clicking on the subsystem.

Finding CAD Subsystem Definitions

CAD subsystem definitions are found in the Hierarchy palette under the Local Components tab ( ).

Note: There may be one shared subsystem with _group at the beginning of its name in the palette. The _group shared subsystem contains all the CAD subsystems that were generated when the original CAD drawing was imported. The _group shared subsystem is convenient for quickly building the original CAD assembly, especially when your Hierarchy contains a large number of parts and sub-assemblies.

Opening a CAD Subsystem

You can view the internal configuration of a CAD subsystem (that is, its multibody components and their parameter settings) by opening it. The internal configuration for a CAD subsystem are read-only.

To open a CAD subsystem:

1.

Right-click (Control-click for Mac) on the CAD subsystem in the Model Workspace.

2.

Select Open Component.

The Model Workspace shows the internal components of the CAD subsystem.

Select a component in the Model Workspace to see its parameter settings in the Properties tab ( ). Note that the parameters for a CAD subsystem cannot be edited. If you want to change a CAD subsystem's parameters, you must first convert it to a standalone subsystem.

Converting a CAD Subsystem to a Standalone Subsystem

Convert an instance of a CAD subsystem to a standalone subsystem if you want to change its internal components or any of their properties. This breaks the link between the component and the CAD subsystem. Any changes that you make to the standalone subsystem will not affect the CAD subsystem definition in your Hierarchy.

To convert a CAD subsystem to a standalone subsystem:

1.

Right-click (Control-click for Mac) on the CAD subsystem in the Model Workspace.

2.

Select Convert to Standalone Subsystem.

The CAD subsystem is converted to a standalone subsystem. For more information on subsystems, see Creating Subsystem Definitions in Chapter 2 of the MapleSim User's Guide.
