The Rerun Simulation Results Tab

The Rerun Simulation Results tab ( ) is located in the Analysis window. When selected, a panel appears beside the model's plots and 3-D animations.  The panel contains a list of all settings, parameters block parameters (that have been marked for rerun), and initial conditions (that have been user-modified).  As well, the panel contains the rerun button which, when pressed, allows users to quickly see the effect the changes in the rerun panel have on the model's results.  Once a rerun is completed, a new result "Latest Rerun" will appear in the model's results and will automatically overlay on any plots or 3-D visualizations that are currently being viewed.

For more information on using Parameter Blocks, see tasks/building/parameterSets/usingParameterBlocks

Note: Any values that have been changed will appear with a green background.  To reset the value to the one the simulation model was created with, simply delete the value.

Accessing the Rerun Simulation Results Tab

To access the Rerun Simulation Results tab:

Note: If this is the first time you are running a simulation on this model, you must run and compile the entire model, by pressing Play( ) on the main window to generate a rerun result (module).

•

Click Show Rerun Panel ( ) in the MapleSim main toolbar. This opens the Analysis window with the Rerun Simulation tab open.

Saving and Comparing Rerun Results

Once you have a fully compiled simulation run, and at least one rerun of the simulation, you will find your most recent rerun of your simulation stored as Latest Rerun.

To access the Latest Rerun:

1.

In the Analysis Window, select Simulation Results ( ).

2.

In the Simulation Results table, go to the Stored Results palette.

3.

Select Latest Rerun.

Notes:

•

The Latest Rerun is not saved automatically with your model. To save the Latest Rerun, right-click and select Save from the context menu.  Saving your Latest Rerun means that it will be available next time you open your model.

•

Every rerun overwrites the Latest Rerun result.

An Example

The example below illustrates the use of the Rerun Simulation panel as applied to a simple model. The example is intended to focus on the role of the Rerun Simulation panel as part of the process of rerunning a simulation without having to recompile it.

1.

Since the topic of the Rerun Simulation panel is so closely connected to the topics of using Parameter Blocks and the Rerun Simulation process as a whole, you will use the sample example model in this example as used in the help pages for Using Parameter Blocks and the Rerun Simulation Process.

2.

From the File menu, select New, then select Model. Alternatively, press Ctrl + N.

3.

In the newly created Model Workspace, notice the Parameter Block automatically added to the model. By default, the Parameter Block is named sysParams.

4.

From the Library Components panel, add the following components to the Model Workspace:

•

From 1-D Mechanical, select Common, then add an Inertia component.

•

From 1-D Mechanical, select Common, then add a Rotational Spring Damper component.

•

From 1-D Mechanical, select Common, then add a Rotational Fixed Component.

5.

Connect the components as shown below.

6.

Attach a probe to the Inertia component

7.

Double-click sysParams. Notice this brings up the Parameters settings window.

8.

In the Name field, enter Damping, then select Rotational Damping Constant for the Type, enter 1 for the Default Value and select  for the Default Units. Press Enter. This creates another row to which you can add another Parameter.

9.

In the newly created row, enter Inertia in the Name field, Inertia [[kg m2]] in the Type field, enter 1 for the Default Value and select kg m2 for the Default Units.

10.

Click Diagram View (Home) ( ) to return to the Model Workspace.

11.

In the Model Workspace, click the Inertia component, then select Simulation Settings ( ).

12.

Under Parameters-> General, change the Moment of Inertia value from the default to Inertia (the same as the Name field in step 8).

13.

Similarly, in the Model Workspace, click the Rotational Spring Damper, then select Simulation Settings ( ).

14.

Under Parameters-> General, change the Damping Constant value from the default to Damping (the same as the Name field in step 7).

Now, you are automatically using the values in the model as defined in the Parameter Block.

Notice that the Make Parameters Available for Rerun option has been selected. This means that, after the model has run one complete simulation, the parameters that are defined in the Parameter Block can be retuned and used in follow up simulation, without having to recompile the entire model.

You can turn off this option by clearing the Make Parameters Available for Rerun check box.

15.

Press Play ( ) to run the simulation.

16.

After the simulation has finished running, click Show Rerun Panel ( ) to open the Rerun Simulation panel.

17.

In the Rerun Simulation panel, change the Initial Velocity to 10 rad/s.

18.

Click Rerun Simulation ( ).

19.

Once the simulation has finished you can examine your results in the Analysis Window.

20.

Note, in the Rerun Simulation panel, in addition to the parameters defined in the Parameter Block and the initial conditions, you can also change simulation settings such as, the duration of the simulation and error tolerances.

21.

To save these Rerun results, first select the Simulation Results tab on the side of the Analysis Window. This will open the Simulation Results panel.

22.

In the Stored Results section, right-click on Latest Rerun.

23.

Assign a name to this Rerun Simulation.

24.

Go back to the Rerun Simulation panel and change the Damping value to 10.

25.

Rerun the simulation.

26.

Notice the new rerun simulation, plotted alongside the named simulation from step 22.
