Bass Drum Pedal – Multibody, Multi-Domain Physical Model in MapleSim – Maplesoft

Bass Drum Pedal

This model converts a translational force applied by the foot to a rotational motion of the beater through three spring-loaded linkages, which in turn applies a translational impulse force to the drum head, which is modeled using an elasto-backlash component.

The relationship between the foot motion and the beater is highly non-linear and fine-tuning the relationship makes the difference between a good and bad "feel" for the drummer. Having access to a high-fidelity model can bring a great deal of insight into the design and allow a more rigorous approach to optimizing its responsiveness.
